Schools, teachers or programs that offer courses to train or qualify individuals for a Certificate of Fitness for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer must be approved by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).

Provide educator information:
- Give the name and address of the teacher, school or program offering the course.

Ensure compliance:
- Follow the General Requirements for Accreditation for Schools. You can find these in the Additional Information section above.

Designated representative:
- Include the name and contact information, including a telephone number, of a representative for the person or school seeking accreditation.

Course curriculum:
- Submit a detailed outline of the course. Follow the Specific Requirements for Accreditations for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer above.

Teaching methods:
- Describe the teaching method for each topic. This can include lectures, discussions, hands-on exercises and videos. Include copies of all written materials to be given out, including sample tests.

Instructor information:
- Provide a list of teachers. Include their qualifications and resumes. List the subjects each teacher will cover.

Fees:
- List all fees that students will pay. This includes tuition, study materials and any other costs.

Renewal frequency
- You must renew this accreditation every year.
- You can do this in person or by mail.
- The FDNY will send you a renewal application 30 days before the end of each year in December.
- This application will include updated course information, the course schedule, and any changes in curriculum or staff.
How to renew
- Submit the renewal letter and the required payment.
- You can do this in person or by mail to the address below, attention FDNY Cashier Unit.
- If you mail your payment, you can use a check or money order.
- If you pay in person, you can use cash or a credit card.
Consequences of not renewing
- If you do not renew your accreditation by the end of each year, your school will be removed from the list of approved schools.
- This means your students will not be allowed to take the test.
Course changes

You need to get approval from the FDNY for any changes to the training course, such as:
- Personnel
- Course schedule (dates, times and location)
- Course curriculum
- Teaching methods
Evaluation for renewal
- To grant renewal, the FDNY will evaluate the effectiveness of your training course.
- They will look at how well your students do in achieving passing grades to decide if they will maintain your accreditation.

- Submit all required documents and the evaluation fee in person or by mail to the address listed below.

Review process:
- The FDNY will review the materials you submit.

Approval notification:
- Approved teachers or schools will get an approval letter by mail. They can start teaching right away.
- Those that are not approved will get a letter explaining why they were not approved. These applicants can fix the issues and reapply.
