This Certificate of Qualification can only be obtained by passing both a written and practical exam. All applicants should review the Notice of Exam.

To take the written exam, applicants must apply in person and bring the following documents:

- Proof that you have successfully completed a 200 hour course for Refrigerating System Operating Engineers from a FDNY certified school or a letter of employment to verify at least one year of practical experience working with a refrigerating system.
CERTIFIED SCHOOLS FOR REFRIGERATION (PDF) - A completed CERTIFICATE OF FITNESS APPLICATION FORM (PDF).
- A completed and signed Z-51 APPLICATION FORM (PDF).
- A Universal Technician Certificate.
- A High School diploma or GED.
- Two forms of identification, at least one must be a government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or a passport.

To take the practical exam, applicants must have:

- Paid the $225 practical exam fee.
- Scheduled an appointment for the practical exam.
